No, I didn't- I only ever use the stable branch. I was tired when i asked the question and completely missed that the last stable gnu smalltalk in debian stable is a 2.1.x version. Usually they are good about keeping packages for gnu stuff up to date,
must not have a maintainer for the gnu smalltalk anymore.
