It did turn out to be git after all.

Although I do have git installed on my mac,
I was logging into a different shell, part of
bitnami rubystack, because it was the only way
I could get rmagick installed locally. This other
shell doesn't have the path to git.

I do think that the Heroku command could do with
some error messages for when it fails to find git.
That would have saved me some time.

But now it works great! Thanks very much to the authors
as this makes Heroku much more useable in my case.

On a side note, I got the same error message as Joe Lewis
at first, but I think it was because the request took too long.
I just tried it again and it worked OK.
