I am current on the playa (Burning Man) where set up a "stretch" 8' hexayurt. after having one of these very very strong gusts that tore half of my camp down (and not just mine), have a few improvement sugegstions to the playa hexayurt designs. Also, the sketchup designs downloadable from there are not great because they show 2D planes where walls (which are 3D) are used. Having proper 3D items should show the angle cuts on all sides. i had figured out the angles along while building it and still made a few miscalculations. also, i saw that most people would cut out the door with a straight cut with 90 degree angles. i suggest to hold the knife at an angle so that the door can not be pushed thru when the wind pushes on it (mind you: i had aligned the oblong yurt so that its pointy ends face the expected wind directions, but then the gust came from a perpendicular direction, which puts quite some unexpected stress on the yurt). also, after this incident i learned that it is smart to cut the door from not down to the very bottom, but cut it out like a window, leaving at least a 6" high frame at the bottom, and then run tape all around the bottom of the yurt to make sure it can't rip apart down there. so, in all, i would like to make a sketchup model of my deisgn, and i know to use it, only i am working every day on the playa and have no fasdt computer at my disposal here, either. but if someone else has the time, i'd be happy to comment on the model and give some tips how to use the 3D parts in sketchup. (basic idea: prepare the panels as components, and use several layers down roof, walls and doors so that they can be disdabled individually for easier viewing) hope this helps -- Thomas Tempelmann, http://www.tempel.org/ --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "hexayurt" group.
