We've just prefabbed a Super Tuff-R 6' hexayurt here in Chicago to be used at our regional burn in SW Michigan. There was abundant 1" Super Tuff-R at the Home Depot closest to my house. We cut it to size with snap craft blades and taped the edges with 2.83" foil weatherstripping tape Spiral's referring to below. It sticks very nicely to the edges of the Super Tuff-R. Since it's used as an insulating tape against weather, it's rated to stay adhesive from temps below 40 degrees below up to 200 degrees fahrenheit. For the six footer I needed to buy two rolls - each roll was about 50 yards and retailed for $20 each.

I probably won't use this material again - fire safety concerns aside, I have really strong reservations about buying petrochemical-based crap from Dow. If the hexacomb becomes available I'll certainly use that next time. I have no complaints about the tape, though.

The fire risk in southwestern Michigan is far, far lower than it is on the Playa - the land is somewhat swampy this time of year and we've had plenty of rain. The yurt will be in a semi-wooded area - it's possible that someone might shoot off fireworks in there but they'd have to be pretty stupid to do so. We're doing our construction dry run this weekend, and we'll consider covering the monofilament with the foil tape. We may do the roof only.

*wave* Hi Vinay!

That would be the foil tape I was speaking of. It is strong, but not
nearly strong enough to hold a hexayurt together on the playa or other
windy environment. The bi-filament tape is hard to match when it comes
to strength. If it were possible to get it already metalized, we'd me
golden.

There is an aluminum tape used in the HVAC industry for connecting ducts. It
is much stronger, more permanent that duct tape, and is fireproof.

Are there possibly any less-flammable tapes around that will hold the
hexayurt and allow us to forgo bi-filament tape entirely?
