We built and put together a semi-folding 8' H13, using 1" polyisocyanurate
panels, but we had problems getting the pieces to line up well, and to
stay up.
I wonder if anyone has experience and advice to share.
Note I didn't fully tape the sections together, instead using short
pieces of tape
to hold the panels together. Obviously this wouldn't do for real
construction;
this was just to try it out in low-wind environment.
Note also I used the original Julie Danger design, where the big flat
roof panel
is attached to the rest of the curved part, rather than the revised design,
where it is attached to the end-wall kites. It seems plausible the revised
design might be more stable.
What happened was the curved part of the roof stayed pretty tight and
in-place
on the walls without problems. However, one or both of the end-wall
kites (i.e.
the piece you'd put the door top in plus the attached piece) would fall down
if left unattended. Also, one of the big rectangular roof sections would
slide down
a few inches. And when when trying to tape things together it would be
difficult
to avoid gaps.
No doubt with sufficient tape the thing could be held together, but it
does seem
to "not want to". So my questions:
(*) Would it be worthwhile re-do the roof sections to use the revised
design?
Is there any experience to suggest this is easier and/or more stable?
(*) Or should I just give up and settle for a regular H12, given that
this is
my first hexayurt (and my first Burning Man)? It will probably be for
only 3 of us,
so a H12 is certainly plenty spacious - though 2 of us are over 6' tall,
so the
extra height is nice.
(*) Any particular advice for how the pieces of the roof should be aligned
and made as stable and tight as possible?
