It has to be a fairly narrow U shape--say an inch of inner radius for 1/2" 
rebar. It helps to have two nice long (say 3') pieces of galvanized that just 
fit over it. A few trials and you'll be turning out U's at a rate of several a 
minute.

Ooh, I'm so glad you asked. Last year there was a post on this group about how 
to pull out rebar using just a long strap and your own body (pasted in below). 
You may be skeptical, but I will tell you that after two years' breakdown days 
made miserable by swearing and ruined rebar,  this technique changed my life.* 
Honest to god, it works. No twisting required.
