By vinyl I assume you mean vinyl+contact cement? I am doing mine that way. I can give you a little feedback.
1. it is definitely more time consuming -- lots of waiting around for cement to dry. It is also hard to do a whole strip at once -- so it usually takes a couple cycles to get a whole strip on. 2. contact cement vapor is explosive, heavier than air, and harmful if inhaled. So that means you need to have a good workplace. Not your living room or basement. On the side of the can it warns you to turn off your furnace and stuff. If you don't have the right type of workspace for the cementing (like a backyard?) then I wouldn't try it.
