If you want to use Rebar, use 1/2" and get two long pieces of 1" galvanized water pipe to candy cane them. 3/8" is too weak and bends too easily from sledgehammering.
Then, cut them to 3 feet lengths, and candy cane them at the 1 foot mark to about a 30 degree bend. Sink them in an angle away from what you are securing with the stubby end OUT, and make the stubby end and the long end meet at a level triangle on the playa surface. Secure your thing through the now convenient hole, then hammer it all the way down. Pulling them out isn't difficult. Bring a demolition bar and a hunk of 2x4 about 1 foot long to use as a fulcrum, and it takes seconds.. Yank it up and out far enough to be able to twist it, then put the demo bar through the loop and twist it 1/4 turn and then WHOOSH.
