If you're using rebar (this lag bolt thing sounds really good to me), my
money is on playa staples (full 180° bend with equal prong lengths): twice
the hold, and FAR easier to drive than candy canes. Once both prongs are in
the ground, none of that crazy sproinginess.

Oh, and for removing whichever you're using, you can take them out with no
more tools than a hook and strap. Position yourself with your groin
directly over the piece. Squat down as far as you can, and wrap the strap
from the piece, up and around your back at the hip. The idea is to have it
as low as possible, with your hips bearing the weight. You can then come up
from the squat, using your legs--and your legs alone, NOT your back--to
pull it out. You have to see it to believe how effective it is. I showed
the technique to someone who had pulled rebar with levers/shovels for
years--always a shit of a job. His jaw dropped and he said "You gotta be
fuckin' kidding me."
