In the interest of repairs to wheels in the field (per se) I
had a grubby handed friend not only touch the wheel but rub his finger over it.
Knowing I was doomed I cranked the wheel and it was not good. The solution I
found at the time was to take an alcohol wipe from a emergency medical kit and
clean the wheel then let it sit for an hour or so. It played great after a quick
rosin. I was up and playing again in no time and it saved me much worry.
As for the proper way to clean the wheel I happily and
heartily defer to Alden.
