I have the advantage (?) of working with vets so we use a lot of ether.

Anything that evaporates quickly and de-greases can be used. Just be sure it
doesn't conflict with the wheel.
The ether thing works very well with an over rosined wheel too. What you get
after use is a clean (and I mean CLEAN) wheel. You will have to rosin a lot
afterwards.

I don't think ether is an "over the counter" thing in the UK.
Would industrial spirit (also known as surgical spirit) do instead? That
works to dissolve  French polish.
I haven't got to that stage yet but, as a novice, will, no doubt, end up
with greasy spots (fumbling with cotton) and excess rosin soon.
