Thanks. I found it!!! I was looking for something else entirely, and
stumbled on it. I found also a rather oblique, tanilizing hint...
"The angle of the wheel and it's distance from the tuning pin box are
of utmost impotance. The distance is important because this provides
the scale of the instrument -the length of the vibrating string -
(huh?) and it must be exactly 343 mm. "

So he (them) is (are) perhaps telling us that the distance of the wheel
is 343mm from the pin- box. ,,, for entirely the wrong reasons. And
the bridge,
(distance between which and the nut determines v.l.) must be the same
distance by distance of an extrapolation of where the "sliding" nut
SHOULD be. I'm thinking about getting an accurate measure of the
tangent centers and back-applying the Rule of 18.
Much more Helpful is a line from page 17 from
www.hurdygurdy.com/info/dutch.htm "Place it with the headward side 343
mm from the nut position. " That would be the Sliding nut...OOO...OOO I
get it. Take 1/2 of 343. Measure from the octave make a mark (default
nut position) and come out 343 again. There's yer Bridge and Bob's your
Uncle.

The trompette and bourdon nut IS the facing wall of the pin bridge so
statements like "The trompette string length is 400mm." "The bourdon
string lengths are 415mm. " are crystaline.

THANK YOU, DOCTOR HACKMANN. I'll admit I was looking prety glum myself
for awhile
