Hello all,
sorry if this is a previously mentioned question, found some issues about this on the list archive regarding strings and wolf tones, but not this sort of beginner question.
How often do you change strings?
For the average violin player, they recommend every 6 months; taking into account than on a hg there is more energy in play with the string on the wheel (the "try to grind coffee with a violin bow" example someone mentioned), I guess the decay on the quality of sound might be faster.
I have noticed that just after two months, my g string starts to sound lousy. No changing cotton, no cleaning the wheel, priming and rosining again, no paper shims up or down, the quality of sound gets suddenly bad, less clean and more scratchy, wobbling a bit.
I will change the string when I get a thomastik vision viola G I want to try (any experiences on that?) but to me it seems strange only just 2 months (I play an average of 5 to 10 hours a week).
Regards,
Oscar.
