And here I was imagining (or trying to imagine) a hg with a soundboard made of 
membrane, not wood, like a banjo. Darn you, Alden, for destroying my fantasy.
   
  But while we're on the topic, has anyone ever built such a thing? Might be

a tuning peg, or sometimes (confusingly) a tuner.

If you have the Schaller machines that are the most common on 
hurdy-gurdies, you can tighten the screw on the top. You can try 
finger-tightening it, but you may need a tool to get it tight enough to 
hold the string under tension.
