I'm usually a lurker, but thought I'd chime in on this one. Another (I think good) piece of advice that I've seen is to ship the instrument rather than trying to fly with it. Although I've never done it myself, the chances of major damage are probably lower, and you have at least a chance of recovering on a claim if damage does occur. It's also cheaper than buying a second seat. Obviously, this doesn't work unless you have a reliable address at the other end to receive the instrument, but for a trip to an organized festival, one should be able to work this out.
