Up to me its justarbitrary and doens'nt affect the working of the chien in the 
way you asked

  OK, 345 mm is a common vibrating string length, but if you make that a bit 
longer, you get bigger keys or more of them, and easier spacing.  But if you 
design the instrument around a longer length, then you have the ability (you 
don't have to, you can be creative with nut placement) to make the bourdons and 
the chien longer as well.

  What effects does changing the length of the chien have on it's buzz?  Is 
there a benefit to making it shorter, or longer, in it's response and volume?  
I know you would have to re-guage the string to get the right tension and note, 
but does the actual vibrating length have noticable effect on the buzz of the 
chien?
