Hello, I recently had a similar problem (weak sound and bad trompette response) which was not solved changing cotton, but wiping off the wheel with some alcohol, and then re-rosining. For me it is not necessary to use the sand paper very often, it is enough with some pure alcohol eventually.

Hi Mike Sounds like you have an accumulation of old rosin & general crud on your wheel. Normal playing is constantly smoothing the rosin layer and putting a polish on it in one direction- imagine stroking a hedgehog. When you turn the wheel the other way, the string is being bowed against the direction of polish and so gives a stronger friction. I suggest you get out the fine ( 400 grit) wet and dry abrasive, wrap it tightly round a flat block of wood and press it against the rapidly turning wheel. Change the face of the abrasive regularly and continue until there is no shiny spot on the paper. You will now have removed all the accumulated crud and can lightly add rosin. Incidentally, Cliff Stapleton told me years ago that does this routine before each cotton renewal.
