Hello alltogether,
One very silly question: what measuremends make a HG an alto?
What is the string length of the melody strings?
on first hand "Alto" is used by several hurdy-gurdy makers as a brand
name for one of their modells.
Alto usually is used to name hurdy-gurdies of the string lenght
longer than the 34.5 cm standard: Alto is the french term for viola.
The viola's string lenght is not fixed as with the violin, but varies
from roughly 34 to 42 centimeters (Thomastik's viola standard strings
are made for 37 cm).
These hurdy-gurdies usually also have a lowest melody pitch similar
to the viola: c or d (the c within the bass clef's lines).
Sometimes "Alto" is used for instruments which have a 36 - 42 cm
string-length but are tuned to violin g (the g two lines lower than
the soprano clef)
Notice that the Weichselbaumer "Tenor" unlike the "tenor" of the
violin family (which is in F) shows the same pitch as the Alto by
standard (I bet it would sound well in F too). The Weichselbaumer
Tenor differs from the Alto in string length, design and timbre and
last but not least keyboard-dimensions.

Hi. Any idea of which type? There are Vision Light, Medium,
Heavy, Titanium, Titanium Orchestra.
as far as I know its medium by standard. but in fact its up to the
musicans choisse: on my Alto I used Thomastik Spirocore Viola heavy
in the beginning then medium now light. I also use the Spirocore
violin a for g' and also used Vision violin strings with succsess,
other strings as quick replacement when on tour I ran out of strings:
Infeld red, Jarga, Larson, Pirastro, Savarez Corelli Crystal ... (u
see I am lazy with keeping strings on stock).
kind regards,
