Scott--
I can only say that the gimped strings work well for plucked
instruments‹I use some on my lute. Mine are from Gamut Strings, which sells
them on an ³equivalent diameter² basis: if you calculate, for example, a
1.5 mm gut string, you get a 1.5 equivalent gimped string, which may measure
only 1.1 mm or less. Their successful performance on the lute led me to
consider them for my hurdy-gurdy.
Can you describe the deficiency in quality from the string? I
assume it could not have been corrected with string pressure or different
padding (what do you call the cotton on the strings?).

Some background on my inquiry about strings: I currently subscribe
to a lute list which is populated with a range of players from rank beginner
to serious professional, with all different insights and biases about
acoustics, historicity, etc. Often enough the discussion turns to strings
and the relative merits of nylon, nylgut (and their overspun cousins), gut,
different twists of gut, loaded gut, gimped gut, overspun gut -- not to
mention appropriate tensions. With the different variables affecting
hurdy-gurdy tone production (string tension and pressure, wheel speed,
humidity) I thought it might be good to find out what experiences you
players have had and can relay regarding strings. I.e., starting out with
the right strings and working from there to achieve a good sound. I am also
curious about what has been available and used historically.

Thanks and regards,
Leonard
