I, too, am a novice at the HG, but I had a similar experience when setting
up my home-built instrument.  What helped me, upon consulting Chris
Henriksen of Boston Catlines, was a chanterelle of smaller diameter and less
tension;  the heavier string was too stiff to allow those harmonics to come
out cleanly up at the top end.  I do, however, need to work more with my
cottoning technique.
