www.saitenklang.de The Spiellent by Helmut Seibert (link on left).
It's basic (no fancy bits/extras etc) but sounds well, is as tough as old boots
and I was playing it with trompette (only once per turn) within five minutes of
getting it out of the box (yes, still in tune) and I had never seen a real one
before much less played one. That, to me, says a lot.
It's 1090 Euros plus postage but, of course, the exchange rates need to be
considered.
At the time, the cost for one from the USA was reasonable (again, because of
exchange rates) but a call to HM Customs warned me there would a lot of tax to
pay on it (although they did have to guess that it would be charged as a
mechanical violin which may, or may not, be right.
That's around $1600 US or £820 UK..
As I say, very basic but playable (2 melody, 2 drone and tronpette) and Herr
Seibert is a very nice person but his English not too good (but good enough).
The sound sample on the page is accurate although I think he's only using one
melody string as it's a little quieter than mine. There is another on the list
(Susan from NZ) who has, I think, his very first one.
Bear in mind, I have never seen or heard any other HG except in videos etc nor
do I know the first thing about making them but what I have suits me fine.

Doesn't that equate to around the price of a "decent" locally-built HG?
Strikes me that you would have to be pretty skilled to build one and know what
you were doing, as well.
I'll stick to my £800 ($1600US) German-built budget one, I think, for the
foreseeable future. ( I'm a carpenter, not a joiner).

I checked the price list for the 2nd kit on masterkit.com
KHG Hurdy Gurdy - Henry III style £563,94 Inc VAT
So that's about 1,112.52 USD
