I am hoping that someone (or everyone) on this list will offer some advice.
on the hurdy-gurdy wiki (http://hurdygurdywiki.a.wiki-site.com/) you find some of the answers you need, there is a listing of makers worldwide (http://drehleierwiki.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/ Kategorie:Instrumentenbau?) - a number of them in the US - and a text "What should a beginner look out for when buying a hurdy- gurdy?" (http://hurdygurdywiki.a.wiki-site.com/).
suggestions for instruments available for purchase in a reasonable time-frame (0-6 months). I would like to find a well made instrument that would be playable by a beginner but of a quality that will remain satisfying as my skills grow. I have in mind a budget of $2500 (or less) but am willing to spend more if necessary to obtain the "right" instrument.
for $2500 = €1692.40 you can buy a phoenix from http://gotschy.com and for €2140 (=$3,163.26) you can buy an Allegro from http:// weichselbaumer.cc depending on your needs both might "remain satisfying", the Allegro being the one with the darker timbre, which I personally prefer.
