Hello,

I know a wall painting of a bagpipe where the drone seems to be a flexible tube.

The interesting part is:
The painting is from about 2001. The orderer of the painting is bagpipe player, the wall is the front wall of his house, and the whole painting is a portrait of him. Many details of the pipes, the face, the clothing are relatively accurate.
But: none of his bagpipes have got a flexible tube as drone.

So even if its a professional painter looking at the actuall object to paint this does not guaranee that the painting is of any iconographic use, even if some details are accurate.

Iconography can be of statistical use: how many?, how often?, compared to ... A single image is by no means evidence for anything exept that it is there.

And yes, I think the illustration in question shows an image of a hurdy gurdy (that does not mean the painter knew it).

kind regards,

Simon
