I had a lot of problems with standing/walking with my hurdy gurdy. My gurdy is very heavy and though designed to be played standing it just kept sliding down so I was playing all hunched over. My back always hurt and it just wasn't fun to play. I play at Ren Faires and we set up a rest area just behind a very nice leather merchant. Working with him, we developed a great set up. My belt is made from bridle leather and shaped similar to a weight belt. On the right side there is a heavy buckle with the ability to make it shorter or longer. The ends slip over the buttons like an ordinary strap. There is then a second strap that is about an inch wide. It goes under the tail piece and onto the bottom strap button. That goes around my shoulder and hooks onto a ring on the belt itself. There is a buckle that allows me to change the length on that strap as well.
The key was having him make the belt and support strap while I was there with the instrument. It is extremely comfortable. I only use the shoulder strap when I am standing/walking with the instrument. Playing sitting I use just the belt or a guitar-type strap. I hope this helps.
