My mother used to grow ornamental gourds. They were like different shaped pumpkins and had very hard skin and very watery insides like vegetable marrows or zucchini that just dried up and left the hard shell and a few seeds maybe rattling inside. The larger ones you could carefully cut the top off and clean out and they would make good water containers. You really only see them used in African instruments these days but it depends where you are I guess.
