although i have built instruments...the reason i ask these questions to begin
with are two fold....

the more informed a prospective buyer (new or old)  is the better decision he
can make for himself, hurdy gurdy's are not inexpensive purchases... and there
many builders....my first gurdy was purchased on dear friends recommendation
and it was an excellent recommendation . but now i want to make more informed
decisions. "in the counsel of many there is wisdom..."

the second reason is i am just dam curious about anything i am impassioned with.

i agree with Melissa, and i believe, even though i am a few weeks old into this
list. that it
should cover ALL aspects of HG... in fact that is why i joined!

the music discussed seems to lean
heavily on the "french side" no problem with that... i do some french
tunes... but i also do some scottish tunes and some irish tunes... and
yes... *hangs head in shame* some tunes from the 50's i like to play what ever
piques my imagination. but i also want to know what makes the engine run.

regarding the sympathetics i thought somebody could point me in the direction
of "sound samples"
with sympathetics not just one note with and with out,but a short tune
played with and with out... or someone that has or had gurdy's with and without
them and what they like better ... a good
description of what they sound like..

when i see a post i am not intrested in on this list  i delete it... no harm
done....
that is why i set up a seperate email account for this list. but i digress....

peace

Well,
If the consensus is to keep these things on this list, I am certainly not
opposed. The only reason for me to suggest another forum was because I'd seen
enough "let's take this off list" discussions that interested me. If there is
consensus to keep this here and people will continue to discuss these matters
on forum, I will be happy to take down the group I set up. It actually makes it
easier for me since I'd not have to bother with the Google group I set up and
would only have to monitor this list.

"tech" for those not interested to push the delete button?I'd really miss these

I wanted them if it wasn't discussed.I'd have to join the builder's list even
though I could never contribute. It could also start something.A forum for
tunes, one for rosin, one for cottoning, one for meetings - the list is

maybe? Please let's keep it all in one place.Colin Hill ----- Original Message

Would it make sense to set up a Google or Yahoo Group just for makers and those
interested in building hurdy-gurdies? While I don't want to fracture the group
on this list, I wonder if a dedicaed group might not attract those who don't
want to participate on a general HG list. It would also allow those with an
interest in detailed building questions to discuss as much as they want without
overwhelming those who have an interest in playing only. My other thought is
that often enough I've seen people say that they'd take such a discussion off
list (like Marc proposes here), in which case the result of that discussion is
lost to anyone else who might be interested, while a Google group would allow
 that to be recorded.
If there is enough interest in a builders' group, I'd be willing to set it up.
Best,
Arle

hi again... the sound board question didnt seem to be very popular. so lets try
this. regarding sympathetic strings any special rules such as length spacing
height from the sound board... do they have to cover the sound board all the
way ... ( i would imagine they would ) how do these issues affect tone and
volume. who has them and how do you like them they seem to add just a wee bit
of echo i
have only heard a sample on the web but not in a tune format just in a single
C note format....any help? peace  jim
