The Google Groups help information at http://groups.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=46438&cbid=-maem9jqr8uou&src=cb&lev=index seems to say that participation in a Google Group via a non-google email address is possible.
I've been unable to track down details of how to do it, and have been unsuccessful with several other groups getting a subscription to work with anything except a gmail address.
