Malaysia Today

Tonight, Anwar Ibrahim was supposed to address his supports at the Bangi home of one-time Deputy Chief Minister of Selangor, Dato' Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Ahmad. Dato’ Dr Zainal Abidin and a few ex-Umno members were also supposed to hand over their membership forms and officially become members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Malaysia Today sent one of its stringers to Bangi so that the whole event could be recorded on video. However, before he could reach Bangi, he was stopped at a police roadblock and interrogated as to where he was going.

When he replied he was going to Bangi, he was asked to step out of the car and was further interrogated as to where in Bangi in particular he was going to and the reason for going there.

Our stringer tried to bluff his way out and replied that he was visiting a friend. The police then wanted to know who this friend is and the purpose of visiting him.

Again, the stringer tried to throw the police of the scent by giving a fictitious name and explained that he was seeing his friend about some business they were about to set up.

The police, however, we were not quite satisfied with the reply and asked our stringer whether he was going to the Anwar Ibrahim function.

“I didn’t think I was able to bluff them any longer and admitted that I was in fact going there.”

The police then took down his particulars and warned him that the function at Dato’ Dr Zainal Abidin’s house did not have police approval or the required police permit so it would be treated as an illegal assembly.

“We will be acting against all those who attend this illegal assembly and if you still insist on going there you will probably suffer injuries if the police decide to break up the gathering by force, plus you will be arrested.”

“We have taken down your particulars and we have warned you so you are now aware of the situation,” warned the police. “Therefore, if you still attend the illegal assembly we will arrest you and charge you in court. And you might also suffer injuries when we break up the gathering by force.”

Malaysia Today’s stringer then phoned back for further instructions and he was advised, for his own safety, to heed the police warning and not put himself in any situation where he would suffer injury or arrest.

As at the time of this report Malaysia Today did not receive any further news from Bangi. It seems, though, everyone heading for Bangi were stopped at the police roadblock and questioned as to where they were going. They were then advised to turn back and not proceed to Bangi lest they run foul of the law or suffer injury when the riot police move in to break up the illegal assembly.
