SPEAKING FREELY
The illusion of the American state

It's hard to be pessimistic about victories. Yet one may be compelled to
echo Italian political theorist and activist Antonio Gramsci at this point:
"Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will."

Americans deserve media that won't bow to Bush

By Amy Goodman and David Goodman

RECENT REVELATIONS that the Bush administration has been fabricating news
stories, secretly hiring journalists to write puff pieces and credentialing
fake reporters at White House news conferences has infuriated the news media.

Washington must be held accountable for its Middle East indiscretions

By Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban - FIRST PERSON DR. BOUTHAINA SHAABAN Syrian
expatriates minister

The world has not really been waiting for the American Presidential
Commission's report on American intelligence failures to know that the
justification for war on Iraq was only a ploy, and that the information was
not as accurate as the gurus of the American administration confirmed.
Professor Hans Blix, who led the United Nations inspection commission,
struggled with the Security Council and U.S. government for a six-month
extension to accurately verify the existence or nonexistence of weapons of
mass destruction in Iraq. He knew, however, like everybody else did, that
the war decision had already been made, and that the U.S. was not willing
to hear anything to the contrary.

The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War

This film is our soldiers perspective of the Iraq War, and how they are
being treated upon returning home. It goes beyond the war stories to look
underneath our American tradition of engaging in war and then abandoning
the warrior.

Eradicate racism in the stands

Betar Jerusalem's fans showed this week that Israeli society - or at least
part of it - is severely ill, infected with blatant, contemptible racism.
At a soccer game between Betar and Bnei Sakhnin, some Betar fans did not
hold back racist curses against Abbas Suan, Bnei Sakhnin's midfielder. They
didn't like the fact that an Israeli Arab scored the equalizing goal
against Ireland, thus leaving Israel still in the race for the World Cup.
They did not like the fact that the Arab team has twice defeated Betar
Jerusalem. "You can go crazy over the fact that Arabs beat us," said one of
the fans, repeating the same kind of contemptible racist remarks made for
generations about Jews in the countries where they were in the minority.
