Freedom Of Speech, RIP

Freedom of speech is dying an excruciating death. Watching it die is
difficult enough, but knowing that, somehow, by my silence, I am complicit
in the death, is unbearable. One thing is certain. I cannot stand by and do
nothing. I cannot stand by and watch our freedoms die. I cannot stand by in
tacit silence, while what's left of our freedom wriggles and squirms and
gasps for air. There has got to be a mass resuscitation. There has got to
be a way to breathe life back into our Bill of Rights. We are careening
down a slippery slope into a disaster, the magnitude of which nobody has
ever witnessed. You know I am right, don't you? You can feel it too, can't
you?

When Tyranny is Law

Even a cursory analysis reveals that the main target of the proposed terror
laws is the basic principles that ensure justice and fairness. Principles
such as "due process,” “no crime without intent,” “innocent until proven
guilty,” “habeas corpus,” “no self-incrimination,” “no ex post facto laws,”
“the right to counsel,” “the right to remain silent,” “the right to see the
evidence that incriminates” and “the right to confront one's accusers" are
the first victims of these laws. These principles are the target because
without doing away with them, acts such as racial profiling would be
impossible and without that, singling out Muslims would not be easily
legitimized in the public eyes.

The Terrorist of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

It is no longer Osama bin Laden and his fanatical followers who pose the
greatest threat to the future of this country. It is George W. Bush and his
equally-fanatical, zoned-out legions who buy into his destructive,
anti-American actions.

No Accountability: Excuse me.

You want me to believe that you love a people who for 13 years we bombed
and impoverished with sanctions so much that you will gladly spend 2,000
American lives to relieve them of a dictator the U.S. once supported? This
is insane.

Robert Fisk reports from beyond the Coalition's concrete walls

There are now two Baghdads. One is the Green Zone, where US and Iraqi

Hypocrites and Liars

Where are the pro-war people

If you fall on the side that is pro-George and pro-war, you get your ass
over to Iraq, and take the place of somebody who wants to come home. And if
you fall on the side that is against this war and against George Bush,
stand up and speak out.

Bush's Other Iraq Invasion:

The Bush administration has succeeded in maintaining a stranglehold on
issues such as public versus private ownership of resources, foreign access
to Iraqi oil and U.S. control of the reconstruction effort -- all of which
are still governed by administration policies

Mr Bush must start to tell America the truth :

Given the awfulness of the situation, the least we are entitled to expect
from the war's architects is some honesty. Instead the Bush team has
peddled ludicrous optimism while surreptitiously rubbishing those who
supported the war but are now worried about where it is going as wimps and
turncoats.

What the President isn't telling us

Last Friday (Aug. 12) we heard again from the president that his policy in
Iraq is to "complete the mission" aka to "stay the course." With the Vice
President, Secretaries of State and Defense and the Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff by his side at his Crawford, Texas ranch, the president
explicitly rendered inoperative last month's statements from senior
officials who implied that we were now on a "declare victory and withdraw"
track, which is another way of saying, "We have done what's doable but now
it's up to the Iraqis."

Congress must probe whether president lied us into war:

President Bush says the mission in Iraq is to spread democracy in the
Middle East. It would be bizarrely ironic if the administration knowingly
hoodwinked Americans and thereby subverted a basic tenet of democracy in
the name of advancing it.

Time to Break the Silence

What mythic view of American righteousness and omnipotence blurred the
vision of Bush supporters when they bought a story that millions of people
in the United States, Canada, France, England, Germany, India, Spain,
Japan, Australia and elsewhere saw through from the start?

Leaderless on the left :

“Sheehan has revealed both the strength and the weakness of the left. We
have a political agenda that can command considerable mainstream support;
yet we do not have a political leadership willing or able to articulate
those agendas. We wield political influence; we lack legislative power.”

Under US noses, brutal insurgents rule Sunni citadel :

For politicians and diplomats in Baghdad's fortified green zone the
constitution is a means to stabilise Iraq and woo Sunni Arabs away from the
rebellion. For Haditha, 140 miles north-west of the capital, whether a
draft is agreed is irrelevant. Residents already have a set of laws and
rules promulgated by insurgents.

will have to face them one day in our own cities and streets, and they know
that the safety and security of every American is at stake in this war," he
said in his weekly radio address.

Double standards don't help

LONDON -- Sixty years ago this month Hiroshima and Nagasaki were devastated
by the first nuclear bombs. The effects of these bombs on the civilian
populations of these cities are a horrific reminder of why all governments
need to redouble their efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation and to
achieve nuclear disarmament. Unfortunately the threat of nuclear
proliferation has increased rather than diminished, and the nuclear powers
have been dilatory in attempting nuclear disarmament.

You have to read Sharon's speech

In his dry and declamatory way, Ariel Sharon turned the Israeli reality on
its head this week.

In the speech that he delivered to the nation, he did not apologize to the
settlers (the truth is that they should be apologizing to the citizens of
Israel, who were forced to pay - monetarily and in human terms - for the
expensive adventure in Gaza). He spoke words of truth that no prime
minister before him ever dared to say.

Four murdered Palestinians not considered newsworthy during disengagement:

The next World War starts in Iran

There is no evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program.

This is not a detail that you should expect to see in the western media. Of
the hundreds of articles I've combed through on Iran only 1% to 2% even
casually mention this salient fact. The reasons for this are fairly obvious
to those who watched the media carefully build the case for war with Iraq
based entirely on false information.
