Vatican warns against marrying Muslims
What these Catholics are really concerned about is that when these women become exposed to Islam they convert to the religion, even though they are not required to do so after marriage. We have personally met or know about many former Catholics who are now Muslim. The whole "cultural differences" argument is very weak. There is no evidence that people who marry someone with a different cultural background do any better or worse than someone who marrys within their own culture. The Catholic church's argumment just does not hold up under scrutiny. If the Catholic church is worried about "bitter experiences" of those who get married then it needs only to read the pages of any Hollywood tabloid and the daily litany of divorces and infidelity reported therein of people who are in fact marrying those within their own cultural background. The Catholic church is just scared and has no solid arguments to counter the growth of Islam, so it resorts to these types of lame arguments.

Fear destroys what bin Laden could not
One wonders if Osama bin Laden didn't win after all. He ruined the America that existed on 9/11. But he had help.
If, back in 2001, anyone had told me that four years after bin Laden's attack our president would admit that he broke U.S. law against domestic spying and ignored the Constitution -- and then expect the American people to congratulate him for it -- I would have presumed the girders of our very Republic had crumbled.

As I was saying to a fellow peasant just the other day, it is ironic that this country should rebel against one King George only to bow down before another monarch of the same name more than 200 years later.

US embassy close to admitting Syria rendition flight
The US embassy in London was forced to issue a correction yesterday to an interview given by the ambassador, Robert Tuttle, in which he claimed America would not fly suspected terrorists to Syria, which has one of the worst torture records in the Middle East. A statement acknowledged media reports of a suspect taken from the US to Syria.
Torture is banned in the US but the CIA has been engaged in a policy of rendition, flying terrorist suspects to countries in the Middle East and other parts of the world where torture is commonplace.

Israel and the Arab world -- a hidden trade waiting for a political deal
CAIRO -- Staff members at a Riyadh hospital got a surprise when they looked at the fine print on the paper cups they were using. Workers in a storeroom at a Dubai hospital were similarly shocked when they took a close look at the tags on a large shipment of uniforms, towels and sheets. The labels said "made in Israel," according to recent newspaper reports from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which have laws that ban imports from the Jewish state.

Denying democratic right to Hamas:
THERE is a fundamental contradiction at the heart of the western project of bringing democracy to Arab-Islamic societies. Stripped of rhetoric, democracy is meant to be a procedure to elect representatives and rulers approved in advance by the principal arbiters in centres of global hegemony. A verdict by a Muslim electorate in favour of a political party that anchors its agenda in Islamic values is virtually a casus belli.
