Letter in Globe and Mail (Jan 13): Khadr not a terrorist
The US insists on calling Omar Khader a "terrorist". Despite the word's casual and propaganda usage, by definition terrorism is violence against civilians. One soldier firing upon another soldier is not terrorism. Although only a 15 year old juvenile when captured by US troops, Khader was acting in the capacity of a soldier in the midst of a defensive battle in Afghanistan. That is not terrorism. As a Canadian I am ashamed of our authorities for ignoring international law regarding Khader's imprisonment, abusive treatment and kangaroo court in Guantanomo Bay. Canada's international reputation as a defender of human rights and the rule of law is underserved.
