Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba (1925-2006)KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- Former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba died at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre (GIMC) in Jalan Ampang here Sunday morning due to heart, lung and kidney complications.
Ghafar was 81 years old.
His family members were at his bedside before he breathed his last at 7.34 am.
Deputy Secretary General in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Raja Hydar Raja Iskandar confirmed his death.
Ghafar's remains will be brought to the National Mosque after Zohor prayers to allow leaders and members of the public to pay their last respects.
Raja Hydar said Ghafar's body will be buried at the National Mausoleum and will be accorded full national honour.
Ghafar was admitted to the GIMC on Jan 24.
He had earlier received treatment at the Pantai Medical Centre due to heart and lung complications in October last year.
Ghafar, who had been critically ill at the GIMC for the past few days, received visitors from the national leaders, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
In his life, Ghafar was known as a grassroot leader until he stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister and did not defend his party post as Deputy Umno President in 1993.
He started his full involvement in politics by contesting in the Melaka Luar State Legislative Assembly in the first general election in 1955. The last constituency that he represented was the Batu Berendam parliamentary seat which he won in the 1999 general election.
As a man with a wealth of political experience, Ghafar in his life was highly respected, both among friends and rivals.
