The Earthquake
An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Yogyakarta, Central Java Indonesia, approximately 25 kilometres north of the Indian Ocean coast and 440 kilometres east of Jakarta early Saturday morning. Reuters Foundation reported, fatalities are mostly caused by head injuries and broken bones. Officials said that more than 5,782 people were killed in the disaster, while between 30,000 and 60,000 people were injured and 200, 000 to 650, 000 are displaced from their homes.
Our Response
Currently, MERCY Malaysia is deploying Emergency Medical Relief teams to Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. MERCY Malaysia responded on 27 May 2006 by sending its first team to Yogyakarta from Banda Aceh. Subsequent team from Kuala Lumpur left for Yogyakarta on 28 May 2006.

Emergency Medical Relief
The teams performed medical procedures and provided immediate medical aid at Rumah Sakit Umum Pendidikan (RSUP) Dr. Sardjito, Rumah Sakit (RS) Karisma and Rumah Sakit (RS) Batestha, Yogyakarta from the day after the earthquake until 14 June 2006. MERCY Malaysia also worked at Clinic Nur Hidayah, Bantul. Team had trained nurses and volunteers at Akademi Perawatan (AKPER) (Nursing Academy) in Clinic Nur Hidayah on proper nursing techniques and procedures on an ad hoc basis .
Mobile Clinics (including Vaccination and Health Education Programme)
MERCY Malaysia has also began providing Mobile Clinics for areas in Klaten District and Prambanan District, Central Java and Bantul, Yogyakarta. Due to the rise of Tetanus cases in affected communities, MERCY Malaysia included Measles, Tetanus and Vitamin A vaccination and health education programme in mobile clinics starting from 14 June 2006. Together with Indonesian Ministry of Health, 70% population of Bantul and 96% population of Prambanan have been vaccinated.
Psychosocial Intervention
MERCY Malaysia began its Psychosocial Intervention programme with the deployment of
its Mission 7 team to Yogyakarta. The team is assessing and attending to affected communities in the surrounding areas on psychosocial issues related to post earthquake trauma. The programme is conducted at 3 locations:

We also started a 3 days training for teacher at Sekolah Negeri Pandak 1 in Bantul on Psychosocial Intervention on 18 June 2006. The programme is targeted to reach school children and fellow teachers affected by the recent earthquake. Training is conducted with students and is to establish peer support group and to train leaders to identify activities that can be done at a community level .
Activities included at SD Tiga Bantul and SD Satu Bantul is art and singing therapy for the elementary school children.
MERCY Malaysia also conducted Training for Trainers programme as part of its Psychosocial Intervention Programme. The training programme is conducted for two (2) groups in Yogyakarta :
Non-Medical Distributions
On 30th May 2006, MERCY Malaysia distributed 300 camp beds to hospitals in Yogyakarta. 170 units of
camp beds were distributed to Rumah Sakit Umum Pendidikan (RSUP) Dr Sardjito, 70 units to Rumah Sakit (RS) Daerah Klaten and 70 units to Posko Kesihatan Bantul. This distribution was made possible from Human Relief Foundation, United Kingdom. MERCY Malaysia has also distributed eight (8) Shelterboxes, consisting of tents, blankets and other essential items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Yogyakarta.
A total of 100 tents were distributed to areas in Monosari District, Yogyakarta (40 tents) and and Boyalali, Central Java (60 tents).
As at 7 June 2006, MERCY Malaysia has distributed the following items in Yogyakarta and Central Java in efforts to assist the affected communities.

MERCY MALAYSIA is constantly monitoring and conducting assessments on the current situation to better serve the communities in the affected areas.
Currently, MERCY Malaysia began its assessment of Yogyakartas health facilities for reconstruction and rehabilitation of Pusat Kesihatan Masyarakat (PUKESMAS) and follow up on its Psychosocial Intervention Programme.

The first team travelled by a special United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) flight from Banda Aceh along with other international organisations based in Aceh and two (2) tonnes of medical supplies contributed by the international agencies from Aceh. The objective of this mission is to secure ground logistics for the subsequent teams that will be coming in from Kuala Lumpur.
