Candidate files report on phantom voters
IPOH, Thurs. - Dr D. Jeyakumar, the DAP candidate who failed to wrest the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat from Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, lodged a police report today accusing the MIC president of bringing in 250 phantom voters from Kampung Chekkadi, here, to vote in Sungai Siput. The report was made at the Ipoh district police station. Dr Jeyakumar said Samy Vellu's statement in the local dailies issued after the result was announced implied that he had breached the Election Offences Act by inserting phantom voters in the electoral list and threatened voters. "This has damaged my reputation as a man who had taken away the rights of the voters to elect their representatives and a person with low moral values who would go to the extent of cheating," he said. "I want the police to investigate to prove that the 250 people were from Kampung Chekkadi and had voted in Sungai Siput," he said in a statement today. Samy Vellu retained the seat for the seventh term in a three-cornered fight. |
