Mahathir says he boycotted Davos meeting over snub by organisers
SEPANG, Malaysia, Feb 1 (AFP) - Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad,
returning Tuesday from a lengthy overseas trip, indicated that he
scrapped
plans to attend last week's high-powered World Economic Forum following
a
snub by organisers.
The decision by the 74-year-old premier sparked rumours he might have
fallen ill or that he had suffered a riding accident on vacation in
Argentina. The local stock market dipped briefly last week.
But a fit-looking Mahathir told an airport press conference: "Initially
I
was asked to make a keynote address. But since I think many top leaders
were expected to come including (President Bill) Clinton they changed
the
program, which made me a member of a panel along with his excellency
(George) Soros.
"I was of the opinion that as a member of a panel I would not be able to
speak much, only to answer questions for two to three minutes.
"So I felt there was no gain and it seems that they do not want to hear
our
opinion -- but only the opinions of developed countries."
Mahathir and international financier George Soros have clashed publicly
in
the past, with Mahathir terming Soros a "moron" and Soros responding
that
Mahathir was a menace to his country.
Speaking in London last Thursday Mahathir termed Soros "a nonentity whom
no
one listens to anymore and whose book is drivel."
Mahathir said he had hoped to use last week's forum in the Swiss ski
resort
of Davos to express his fears about the West's interpretation of
globalisation.
"To expect corporations in developing countries to compete with
corporations from developed countries which have already merged is
ridiculous," he said. "And that means that we will be swallowed up.
"I'm not against globalisation but I'm against the interpretation of
globalisation."
Mahathir spent his vacation in Argentina and the Caribbean before
visiting
London and going on to Paris for talks with President Jacques Chirac. He
said Malaysia had "a special relationship with Chirac.
"The French seem sympathetic to our views. Naturally we come close to
them."
Mahathir said he had put his views on the financial crisis to the Group
of
Seven leading economies through France. "President Chirac wanted me to
attend a G7 meeting but unfortunately others did not agree," he said
without elaborating.
Analysts say Mahathir has pressing problems to sort out in his ruling
United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). A move to ensure that the
premier's chosen successor does not face a contest in May party
elections
has proved a miscalculation and stirred dissent, they say.
On January 4 UMNO's Supreme Council chaired by Mahathir "advised"
branches
and divisions that the premier and Deputy Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
should be nominated unopposed as party president and deputy president on
May 11.
Mahathir, 74, says this will be his last term. Abdullah's appointment to
the party deputy presidency would confirm his status as heir apparent.
"We want to avoid a contest because whenever a contest takes place there
is
division in the party," the premier said, adding that he did not want to
repeat the "bitter experience" of 1987.
Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah almost unseated Mahathir in 1987 party polls
before
quitting to form a new party. He returned to UMNO in 1996 when his party
folded but refuses to confirm or deny that he will try to challenge
Abdullah.
