Aceh independence leader killed
Dari BBC News
Please confirm this.... anyone...
Reports from Malaysia say a
separatist leader from the Indonesia
province of Aceh has been
assassinated just hours before a
truce between Aceh rebels and the
Indonesian Government was due to
take effect.
The wife of Teuku Don Zulfahri was
quoted by the French news agency
AFP as saying her husband had been
shot dead in a restaurant in the
Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Putri Mei Abdullah said she had no
idea who had carried out the attack.
Mr Zulfahri who was in exile in
Malaysia was the secretary-general of
the Free Aceh Movement.
Motive unclear
Police sources, quoted by the
Malaysian state news agency,
Bernama, said Mr Zulfahri was shot
twice, in the back of the head and
left arm, while having a drink with
three friends
The report said police were looking
for his friends as they sought to
establish a motive for the killing. No
one has so far been arrested in
connection with the shooting.
The killing came hours ahead of a
three-month truce between the
Indonesian Government and
separatist guerrilla's in Aceh, who
have been fighting for 25 year, was
due to come into effect.
Earlier, Indonesian President
Abdurrahman Wahid said he was
hopeful the ceasefire would lead to a
permanent settlement to the
long-running rebellion in the region.
In a statement broadcast on
television, President Wahid said he
hoped the period of violence in Aceh
was now at an end, and a new era of
peace was beginning.
Earlier this month, Mr Zulfahri told
the Aceh newspaper Serambi that he
supported the truce. He also urged
"the nation of Aceh" to hold a
dialogue with Jakarta.
Violence in Aceh
But just hours before this ceasefire
was due to come into force, gunfire
and explosions could be heard around
the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.
At least one man was injured.
Since the ceasefire agreement was
signed by the government and
separatist rebels last month in
Switzerland, more than 20 people
have been killed and many others
injured in frequent clashes.
However, the government says it
remains optimistic the ceasefire will
be effective.
