At least 32 killed in fresh violence in Maluku islands
JAKARTA, May 26 (AFP) - A fresh outbreak of Muslim-Christian violence in Indonesia's
North Maluku islands has left at least 32 dead and 52 wounded, the state Antara news
agency and church sources there said Friday.
The church sources said a radical Muslim group called Jihad Force and local Muslims
had carried out a savage sea-borne attack on Christians in the Galela and Tobelo
subdistricts of Halmahera Island early on Thursday.
Many residents in the two subdistricts had fled the area, Antara said, quoting an
operations officer at the North Maluku Security Control Command, Major Puguh.
Antara gave a total of 32 dead, including casualties among the attackers.
An official with the Synod of Halmahera Churches, speaking on condition of anonymity
from Tobelo, told AFP by phone, that 26 villagers were killed.
"Twenty-six Christian residents in Mamuya village were killed in an attack around 5:00
a.m. (2100 GMT Thursday). Based on reports from eyewitnesses, the attackers were a
mixed group of the Jihad Force and local Muslim residents from Soasio village," the
official said.
"The attackers came in speed boats and were armed with semiautomatic weapons ... some
of the local Muslim residents had come from the nearby Soasio village," he said.
"At least 52 people were also wounded or injured from the attacks which lasted about
three hours. All of them have been taken to the Bethesda hospital here.
"Eyewitnesses said some of them (victims) were burned alive, others were shots or
hacked by sharp weapons," he added.
"But right now, things are slightly calmer since there was help from the military
troops earlier today to restore the situation."
Antara said the dawn attack Thursday was carried out by about 2,000 men dressed in
white, the trademark of the Jihad Force.
"It caused panic among the villagers most of whom were then still asleep. Many of them
were shot and burned to death along with their homes," the agency said, adding that
some 150 houses were torched.
The "Laksar Jihad" force, which claims a membership of some 10,000, has been sending
its members from othjer Indonesian islands to the Malukus despite an order from
President Abdurrahman Wahid that they be barred from leaving their base in central
Java.
The Jakarta Post said that eight of the attackers were killed when residents fought
back and that identity cards found on two of the bodies showed that one had come from
North Sumatra, and the other from South Sumatra.
Sumatra island is at the other end of the archipelago.
Maluku governor Saleh Latuconsina told an AFP journalist in Ambon Friday that the
authorities were working on ways to get the Jihad Force members out of the islands.
"It will be very difficult to get them out of here, but they must leave," Latuconsina
said.
The renewed violence in North Maluku came on the heels of a week of Muslim-Christian
clashes in the city of Ambon, on the island of the same name to the south of
Halmahera.
Last week's Ambon violence left some 35 people dead, according to an unofficial count.
The airport there was forced to close and foreign aid workers have fled.
Ambon residents have said for the past three days that they feared that the current
lull in the violence in the city was because the Jihad Force members had moved
elsewhere in the islands to avoid arrest or expulsion.
More than 3,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands of people have fled the
islands since the communal violence started there in January 1999.
