Hundreds of thousands attend Sharia declaration in Nigeria by Peter Cunliffe-Jones

KANO, Nigeria, June 21 (AFP) - Hundreds of thousands of Muslims gathered at

parade ground in Kano on Wednesday to witness the expected declaration of Islamic law
in northern Nigeria's most populous state.

The crowd, the largest seen here in many years, started arriving at the Eid ground in
the centre of Kano in the early hours of Wednesday.

The gathering, composed mainly of young Muslim men, was expecting Governor Rabiu
Kwankwaso to announce plans for the implementation of Sharia in the state, which
borders the Sahara desert.

As the vast crowd chanted "Allahu akhbar" (God is Greater), Islamic lawyer Abubakar
Mika'il Hassan explained that Muslims believed that the introduction of Sharia would
cure the many problems besetting this country.

"This has a very long history in Nigeria," Hassan said.

"We Muslims have been yearning to see the Sharia code be implemented for many years.
It is our right. We are grateful for the God almighty that Sharia will be implemented
today."

In Cairo, meanwhile, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo played down fears that the
declaration of Sharia in Kano could spark more unrest in Nigeria.

Islam has been a central part of life in northern Nigeria for centuries, and Muslims
form a 90 percent majority of the population in Kano.

But Kano is volatile and fears were widespread here Wednesday of clashes in coming
days with the large Christian minority over the declaration.

Kano will become the fourth northern Nigerian state since October to declare Sharia
after Zamfara, Sokoto and Niger.

By virtue of its size, with a population estimated at between five and eight million,
Kano is by far the most significant.

Bids to introduce Sharia in neighbouring Kaduna State sparked clashes between Muslims
and Christians there in February and May that claimed a total of more than 1,300
lives.

The declaration of Sharia in a growing band of northern states is seen by many as
risking an eventual splitting up of Nigeria, home to 120 million people and the
world's most populous black nation, between its Muslim-dominated north and
Christian-dominated south.

Officials here have so far declined to set out details of exactly how they plan to
implement Sharia, who will be affected by the laws, and which if any areas of the city
will be exempt.

In recent days, thousands of southern Christians living in Kano have left the city,
fearing a repeat of unrest seen here last July, or a spreading of the religious riots
in Kaduna.

The government of Obasanjo, a southern Christian, has been exerting behind-the-scenes
pressure on the leaders of the northern states not to go ahead with Islamic law.

And in April, the governors of the 19 northern states issued a statement promising to
set up a committee with Muslim and Christian leaders to dialogue on aspects of the
Sharia not already included in the northern penal code.

That dialogue has not taken place.

Obasanjo has been strongly criticised in the south for not stopping the Sharia
movement when it began last October in Zamfara.
