GOOD NEWS - NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO (NPR) HOST APOLOGIZES FOR OFFENSIVE
REMARKS

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/25/1999) - National Public Radio (NPR) "Performance
Today" host Martin Goldsmith has issued an on-air apology for remarks he
made about the alleged illicit sexual activity of Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him).

During his January 20th program, Goldsmith related a "legend" that the
Prophet was once offered coffee by the Angel Gabriel. According to
Goldsmith, this coffee allowed the Prophet to "make love to 40 women in one
night and he did the same thing for 40 nights in a row." (This is a
paraphrase of remarks reported to CAIR by concerned Muslims and confirmed by
Mr. Goldsmith.)

On his Saturday, January 23 program, Goldsmith said:

"...We end this hour with an apology. On Wednesday's edition of Performance
Today...I referred to a legend involving the prophet Mohammed...We intended
no offense in that introduction, but we understand that some listeners were
offended, and we offer sincere apologies for that. Thanks to our listeners
for making us aware of their concerns."

"Many thanks go to the hundreds of Muslims and supporters who immediately
contacted the program's producers to demand an apologize. Individual efforts
do make a difference," said CAIR Board Chairman Omar Ahmad. "We also thank
Mr. Goldsmith and NPR for their response to Muslim concerns," said Ahmad.

PAUL HARVEY REFUSES TO APOLOGIZE
Muslims are urged to contact ABC Radio Networks

Unfortunately, our work is not finished. Paul Harvey, the most listened-to
radio broadcaster in the world (23 million listeners, more than 1200
stations), has still not apologized for suggesting in a recent program that
Islam is a "fraudulent religion."

A transcript of Harvey's remarks obtained by CAIR, and confirmed by Harvey's
office, states: (The remarks were made in a monologue focusing on events in
the Muslim world.)

"A new Islamic decree is being distributed at this moment, in Saudi
Arabia...It condemns in the name of Islam, the celebration of birthdays, or
anniversaries ...Saudi Arabia is a conservative Muslim country, and had
intended to celebrate its own centenary late this month. Fraudulent
religions should be recognized by what they stand for and what they won't
stand for [emphasis added]- by their fruits, so to speak. Gunfire at a
mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan is in the name of religion..."

When asked whether Harvey would respond to Muslim concerns, a "Paul Harvey
News & Comment" staffer suggested that the remarks might be "factually
correct" and therefore do not require an apology.

IMMEDIATE ACTIONS REQUESTED: (PLEASE BE POLITE. Hostile comments CAN and
WILL be used to harm the image of the Muslim community.)
