Muslims asked to monitor "Touched

by an angel" for stereotypes

Members of Congress sponsor screening of episode on Capitol Hill

(WASHINGTON, DC - 9/22/1999) - American Muslims have expressed concern about
the possibility that an upcoming episode of the popular CBS program "Touched
by an Angel" (Sunday, September 26, 8 p.m. ET/PT) is being used as political
and religious propaganda. CBSs web site describes the seasons premiere
episode:

"A State Senator finds herself in a personal conflict when she must choose
between publicly acknowledging the rumored existence of slavery in Sudan,
against the wishes of her corporate constituents, or keep quiet about this
atrocity and ensure her re-election"

In a letter to the CBS, CAIR stated: "this complex issue is commonly used
to defame the faith of Islam through unjustified linkages and
juxtapositions." CAIR asked for a screening of the episode and requested a
disclaimer.

Concerns about the motivation for the program grew after it was learned that
the episode would be shown on Capitol Hill by elected officials, such as
Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), who are backing legislation on this issue. In a
review of the episode, a Muslim reporter who attended the screening wrote:

"One scene depicts a man armed with an assault rifle, dressed in an
Islamic-style turban and robe, marching a column of dark-skinned and
bedraggled refugees through the desert.

"Martha Williamson, the show's executive producer, said
SenatorBrownbackand another member of Congress approached her with the
idea of doing a show on the subject of Sudan. They asked me to plant the
seed, said Williamson.

"Not only did Brownback ask Williamson to do the show, he acted as a
consultant to the producers, visited the set as the episode was being
filmed, and hosted the show's screening Tuesday night. The screening
followed the introduction in July of legislation co-sponsored by Brownback
(S. 1453) that, according to materials distributed by the senator's office,
will provide food assistance to rebel forces in Southern Sudan and tighten
sanctions on the Sudanese government." (http://www.iviews.com)

TALKING POINTS: (Based on previous programs of this type.)

1) American Muslims stand ready to fight the scourge of slavery. After all,
it was the Prophet Muhammad himself who, more than 1400 years ago, said in
his last sermon: "...a white person has no superiority over a black person,
nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action."
However, to be effective, those who engage in this struggle must free
themselves of unacknowledged political or religious agendas, anti-Muslim
stereotyping or cultural bias. This is too important an issue to be left to
those whose information and motivations are suspect.

2) "if Americans demand of Sudan simple truths, it can yield only one: If
the civil war does not end, neither will the dying, or the conditions that
produce famine and epidemic disease - or slavery. Only an end to the civil
war can stop the suffering. And the painful corollary is that all actions
that extend the civil war, including slave redemptions, prolong the
suffering of a people who deserve our wisest compassion." (Eric Reeves,
Christian Science Monitor, 5/26/1999)
