PM explains his sons' move into business
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his three sons
who are in business need not necessarily depend on
him for their business because they are largely
dealing in sectors that do not involve the
government.
He also said it would be unrealistic to prevent his
sons from being involved in business just because
their father is prime minister.
" I cannot say, look here, your father is prime
minister, please be poor. You have to be realistic,"
he said in an interview with the 'Gosip' magazine in
its latest edition.
Dr Mahathir spoke of his sons' move in business
when asked by the magazine about talk that he will
only step down as prime minister once he is
convinced that his successor is able to guarantee the
wealth of his family members and friends is not
"disturbed".
" I'll tell you frankly, I'll tell you frankly. My children
need not necessarily depend on me. Their businesses
do not involve the government. If there is, it's only
small," he said.
Dr Mahathir said his eldest son, Mirzan, deliberately
ventured to do business in Hong Kong, India and
Germany in order to prevent people from making
accusations but this he did because he had the
expertise to build and turnaround the shipping
business.
He said Mirzan created a big shipping consortium for
Malaysians to control, adding that " but people still
accuse him, let it be so".
About public perceptions of his sons, the prime
minister asked: "What shall I ask my sons to do? To
become government officers? Probably if they get
promoted, there are people who say this is
unacceptable, (it is) nepotism".
Dr Mahathir said whether his children became
government officers, politicians or bsuinessmen,
there would still be people who would hold certain
perceptions.
" So what can my children do? Only to stay at home
and sleep?" he asked.
He said in the case of his three sons, they could stay
at home without working if they are stupid, but they
are very qualified.
He said apart from Mirzan, his two other sons
(Mokhzani and Mukhriz) are also capable
businessmen.
But the prime minister said he does not allow his
children to bid for (government) tenders.
Asked about many companies that were only too
willing to take his children into their board of
directors because of their connection, Dr Mahathir
replied: " This is another matter. They have the
capability. In business, capable directors are in
demand. They also control a number of companies
and so they become directors themselves. If they
have shares in a company, why can't they become
directors".
The monthly 'Gosip' magazine is published since
February by Citra Publishing Sdn Bhd which says its
concept is presenting issues and gossips with a
sense of humour and "without fear or favour".
In the interview, the prime minister also conceded
that he was wrong in the choice of certain projects
for development but said that most of the projects
that he initiated were successful.
One failed project he cited is Perwaja Steel in
Terengganu which ended up with losses running into
billions.
" I admit that I made mistake, such as Perwaja, I
don't know why I can't make it a success. But we are
still trying to find ways. I didn't say this person is
wrong, or that person is wrong. I take the blame for
myself".
" I admit I am not perfect. Sometimes we misjudge.
Is there anybody who never makes a misjudgement.
I admit I make mistakes. I have never claimed I am
a perfect leader who never makes mistakes, but the
majority of what I did is right...you can see for
yourself," he said.
Dr Mahathir said if he did not lead properly, Malaysia
would not be as progressive as it is today.
He cited the national car, the multimedia super
corridor and the Kuala Lumpur international airport as
some of his successful projects.
He said the new airport that was operational two
years ago was built at a bargain compared to if it
were to be started now. It is necessary because the
old airport that was built for 400,000 passengers
annually had to to cater for 17 million passengers.
" There are many that I have done. Just look around,
is there anything stupid that I had done?," he asked.
Dr Mahathir is also proud of another of his project,
the Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) or national
equity corporation.
" There does not exist elsewhere in the world a unit
trust that is so big with seven million share holders.
The biggest such unit trust elsewhere only has one
million share holders. Are we wrong in doing this," he
said.
