U.S. warship, USS O'brien told to leave RI waters
JAKARTA (JP): U.S. Spurance Class type destroyer USS O'brein was told to
leave Maluku waters by Indonesia's Rencong and Pandrong naval ships as
its
arrival raised suspicion.
The warship was reportedly armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Commander of the Indonesian Navy Eastern Fleet, Rear Adm. Djoko
Sumaryono,
told Antara on Thursday that the warship was spotted in Indonesian
territory between the Seram Sea and the Buru Sea on Saturday without
notification of its purpose.
"It only said that it was using its right to pass through Indonesian
waters without giving further, detailed explanation," Djoko said.
A ship called Rajawali, which belongs to a local businessman, was seen
trying to approach the U.S. warship, Djoko said, adding that the local
ship had been checked but nothing suspicious was found.
The news agency also reported that many associated the warship's arrival
with the recent visit of U.S. envoy Robert Polar to Ambon to assess data
on the strife-torn province.
There are certain groups in Ambon reportedly seeking foreign assistance
to
maintain peace in the territory. However, Djoko refused to speculate on
the warship's presence, saying the Navy would safeguard Indonesian
waters
from foreign trespassers.
"I don't want to associate the warship with the U.S. envoy's visit or
requests from local groups on the deployment of foreign troops. Our duty
is to prevent foreign parties from threateningour sovereignty," Djoko
said.
The USS O'brein was also carrying two helicopters.
