Malaysian airforce men destroy nightclubs in rampage: police
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (AFP) - More than 100 Malaysian airforce personnel
went
on a destructive rampage at nightspots in a town on Borneo island late
Sunday, injuring two civilians, police said Monday.
The men attacked eight entertainment centres in oil-rich Labuan in Sabah
state, breaking tables, chairs, glasses and smashing four cars in an
hour-long onslaught, Labuan police chief Sidin Abdul Karim told AFP.
Sidin said it was unclear why the officers ran amok, although revenge
for
the death of a fellow officer could have been a motive.
"This (type of violence) is very bad. Firstly because it was committed
by a
disciplined organisation's personnel and secondly because there appears
to
be no real reason for it to happen," he said.
Two civilians sustained minor injuries in the rampage.
Sidin said initial investigations showed some of the men were unhappy
over
the death of a fellow officer in a motor accident several days ago.
They suspected he was killed by people who frequented the night clubs
and
apparently attacked the clubs out of anger, he said.
"They might be doing it out of revenge but both incidents have no
relation.
The first incident when (the officer) died happened very far from the
town
area," Sidin added.
The suspects were being held in their barracks until investigations had
been
completed.
"We will investigate and find out who was responsible for this and why
they
did it. Although there were no serious injuries, this is a very serious
offence and damage was quite substantial," Sidin said.

Two Injured In Rampage By Some 100 RMAF Personnel In Labuan
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Two people were slightly injured
while
thousands of ringgit worth of equipments belonging to several nightspots
in
Labuan were damaged when a group of some 100 Royal Malaysian Air Force
(RMAF) personnel went on a rampage last night.
Four vehicles belonging to civilians were also damaged in the incident
believed to be connected to the recovery of the body of their colleague
found burnt along with his motorcycle at an open space near the Sabah
Flour
and Feedmills complex here on Friday.
They came on motorcycles and broke into nightspots on the island at
about
11.30pm and started smashing glasses and other equipments in nine
entertainment spots, much to the surprise of the patrons and their
owners.
Labuan OCPD Supt Sidin Abdul Karim, when contacted, confirmed the
incident
which involved personnel from the Labuan RMAF base.
No arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident which
lasted
for about 30 minutes.
"They went into one nightspot after another and started damaging things.
So
far, two civilians were reported to be slightly injured," he said.
According to Supt Sidin, the nightspots operator had estimated the
damage to
their equipments to be at between RM30,000 and RM40,000 at each of the
premises.
Asked whether the incident was connected to the death of their
colleague,
Supt Sidin said it could not be ascertained yet.
The badly charred remains of their colleague, identified as Abdul Bar
Ali,
were found by a member of the public on Friday morning.
Abdul Bar, 22, of Kampung Bangsar, Perlis, attached to the ninth
squadron of
the RMAF here, was said to be on his way back after having drinks at one
of
the nightspots on Thursday night when he lost control of his motorbike.
He was believed to have been pinned under the machine after the crash
and
the running engine subsequently caught fire.
Supt Sidin said a post-mortem had been carried out and based on its
report,
the police did not suspect foul play.
"Maybe they (the RMAF personnel) were not satisfied with the post-mortem
report and suspected something else had caused the accident," he said.
Police are still investigating.
