100 Malaysian airforce personnel

<DIV></DIV>>on a destructive rampage at nightspots
in a town on Borneo island late
<DIV></DIV>>Sunday, injuring two civilians, police
said Monday.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The men attacked eight entertainment
centres in oil-rich Labuan in Sabah
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>state, breaking tables, chairs, glasses
and smashing four cars in an
<DIV></DIV>>hour-long onslaught, Labuan police
chief Sidin Abdul Karim told AFP.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Sidin said it was unclear why the
officers ran amok, although revenge
<DIV></DIV>>for
<DIV></DIV>>the death of a fellow officer could
have been a motive.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>"This (type of violence) is very bad.
Firstly because it was committed
<DIV></DIV>>by a
<DIV></DIV>>disciplined organisation's personnel
and secondly because there appears

<DIV></DIV>>Two civilians sustained minor injuries
in the rampage.

<DIV></DIV>>Sidin said initial investigations
showed some of the men were unhappy

<DIV></DIV>>the death of a fellow officer in a
motor accident several days ago.

<DIV></DIV>>They suspected he was killed by people
who frequented the night clubs
<DIV></DIV>>and
<DIV></DIV>>apparently attacked the clubs out of
anger, he said.

<DIV></DIV>>"They might be doing it out of revenge
but both incidents have no
<DIV></DIV>>relation.
<DIV></DIV>>The first incident when (the officer)
died happened very far from the

barracks until investigations had

Personnel In Labuan

<DIV></DIV>> KOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Two
people were slightly injured
<DIV></DIV>>while
<DIV></DIV>>thousands of ringgit worth of
equipments belonging to several nightspots
<DIV></DIV>>in
<DIV></DIV>>Labuan were damaged when a group of
some 100 Royal Malaysian Air Force
<DIV></DIV>>(RMAF) personnel went on a rampage last
night.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Four vehicles belonging to civilians
were also damaged in the incident
<DIV></DIV>>believed to be connected to the
recovery of the body of their colleague
<DIV></DIV>>found burnt along with his motorcycle
at an open space near the Sabah
<DIV></DIV>>Flour
<DIV></DIV>>and Feedmills complex here on Friday.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>They came on motorcycles and broke into
nightspots on the island at
<DIV></DIV>>about
<DIV></DIV>>11.30pm and started smashing glasses
and other equipments in nine
<DIV></DIV>>entertainment spots, much to the
surprise of the patrons and their
<DIV></DIV>>owners.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Labuan OCPD Supt Sidin Abdul Karim,
when contacted, confirmed the
<DIV></DIV>>incident
<DIV></DIV>>which involved personnel from the
Labuan RMAF base.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>No arrest has been made so far in
connection with the incident which
<DIV></DIV>>lasted
<DIV></DIV>>for about 30 minutes.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>"They went into one nightspot after
another and started damaging things.
<DIV></DIV>>So
<DIV></DIV>>far, two civilians were reported to be
slightly injured," he said.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>According to Supt Sidin, the nightspots
operator had estimated the
<DIV></DIV>>damage to
<DIV></DIV>>their equipments to be at between
RM30,000 and RM40,000 at each of the
<DIV></DIV>>premises.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Asked whether the incident was
connected to the death of their
<DIV></DIV>>colleague,
<DIV></DIV>>Supt Sidin said it could not be
ascertained yet.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The badly charred remains of their
colleague, identified as Abdul Bar
<DIV></DIV>>Ali,
<DIV></DIV>>were found by a member of the public on
Friday morning.

<DIV></DIV>>Abdul Bar, 22, of Kampung Bangsar,
Perlis, attached to the ninth
<DIV></DIV>>squadron of
<DIV></DIV>>the RMAF here, was said to be on his
way back after having drinks at one

<DIV></DIV>>the nightspots on Thursday night when
he lost control of his motorbike.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>He was believed to have been pinned
under the machine after the crash
<DIV></DIV>>and
<DIV></DIV>>the running engine subsequently caught
fire.

<DIV></DIV>>Supt Sidin said a post-mortem had been
carried out and based on its
<DIV></DIV>>report,
<DIV></DIV>>the police did not suspect foul play.

<DIV></DIV>>"Maybe they (the RMAF personnel) were
not satisfied with the post-mortem
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>report and suspected something else had
caused the accident," he said.
