WAS THE RAID CALLED OFF?
By Shahrul Hafeez [EMAIL PROTECTED] August
SELANGOR police will investigate whether a raid,
which might have netted the biggest haul of pirated
VCDs in the country, was "ordered" to be aborted.
This follows a claim by Wayang Tinggi Marketing (WTM)
Sdn Bhd that the raid, at a shoplot in Taman Rakan, Cheras, had failed to take place
as planned yesterday.
Earlier, WTM, the exclusive licensee for movies, including the latest Jackie Chan hit,
Rush Hour 2, had tipped off the police on the storage of pirated VCDs at the shoplot
in Jalan 13.
WTM managing director Danny Liew and enforcement director Low Thim Wai had staked out
the place for two days. Yesterday, they arrived with a team of policemen only to see
the raid called off at the last minute.
Now, they are left with more questions than answers.
Selangor anti-vice and gaming chief Superintendent Sulaiman Menga Din, when contacted
last night, said he was in the dark over the supposed raid.
He said he will order an investigation into the matter.
Yesterday, Liew and Low, together with the policemen, purportedly from the Selangor
police contingent, arrived at the shoplot at about 4pm.
Low told The Malay Mail that while they were waiting, a man, whom they believed to be
a runner for a syndicate dealing in pirated VCDs, turned up at about 7pm.
"We ambushed the man and he led us into the shoplot where we saw scores of cartons
containing what we believe are pirated VCDs," he said.
What happened next was unclear.
According to Liew, they summoned two lorries to collect the VCDs.
"While we were waiting for the lorries, several luxury cars arrived at the scene.
"The occupants of these cars were talking on their mobile phones and all of a sudden,
the policemen who were with us decided not to go ahead with the raid and left the
scene.
"Two men, who were not policemen, went inside and closed the doors behind them.
"We waited outside for more than two hours but no one emerged from the shoplot." Fed
up, Liew and his party left the scene.
Liew and Low are now wondering whether their efforts in informing the police, were in
vain.
