Hekmatyar to mediate between Taliban and Iran

PESHAWAR (WAHDAT): Former Afghan prime minister and
leader of Hizb-e-Islami, Engineer Gulbaddin Hekmatyar,
has said he will launch sincere efforts to settle
differences between Tehran and Kabul.
Hekmatyar has assured Ameerul Momineen Mullah Mohammad
Omar that he will cooperate with the Taliban
authorities in reducing tension between Iran and
Afghanistan's ruling Taliban in the current crisis,
unidentified sources said.
The assurance was given during a telephone
conversation between Mullah Omar and Hekmatyar late
Saturday night. Sources said that the two leaders have
agreed to the need of diplomatic efforts to end the
current crisis. However, details were not available.
Iran never accepted Taliban as a legitimate government
of Afghanistan and continued to recognize the
government of Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani, who now heads
the Northern Alliance. However, the Alliance's recent
overtures to the United States annoyed Iran, which
also was among a few Muslim countries that condemned
the American strike against Afghanistan.
Hekmatyar also indicated that he would go to
Afghanistan at a suitable time to play his role in the
crisis arising out of the foreign military operation
in his war-torn country.
