BAGHDAD March 27 (NNI): Iraq's elite Republican Guard killed "a
number of American enemies" and destroyed six US tanks near a
bridge on the Euphrates River in the southwest of Iraq, an Iraqi
military official told a Xinhua correspondent Wednesday.
Some special forces within the Republican Guard, along with Iraqi
regular troops, earlier Wednesday launched a massive offensive
against a US advance team, said the officer on condition of
anonymity.
Mortars and rocket-propelled grenades were used in the fight, the
officer said, adding that the Iraqi Republican Guard special forces
and regular troops had retreated back to their defense positions
after the battle.
But the officer did not disclose details on the exact battle site,
only saying "in southwestern Iraq."
