GMax is very cool.  It's a high power tool capable of a lot of similar things as 3dsm, one major advantage is that it is free so you get all the technical support you want for it for free.  It comes with a complete set of tutorials for making your very first game.  From characters to levels to power chargers, to animating.  There is even a tutorial on modeling a P-38 Lightening Fighter (plane).  Basically, GMax is your friend.  I am not a skilled in the quality tools like lightwave and 3dsm but I mad  this little guy last night with little difficulty (see image).

basically its a modeller and a map making alternative to 3d studio max or milkshape and also worldcraft.

Gmax is a product made by discreet. It does lots of the things 3dsm does but in a toned down version. This product also allows you to create add-ons that would allow you to make maps using it. An example add-on would be the tempest add-on that allows you to make q3 maps
