I've just compiled dmc with the same _heapchk test and that runs fine. I've started 
diffing hl & dmc source trees and the very first diff I find is in dmc/cl_dll/ammo.cpp 
and is commented " //Fixes some crashes ". This just looks like part of the standard 
weapons code and not a dmc modification.

So are there bug fixes in dmc source that have not been put back into the hl source?
Do other mod writers base their code on the dmc source rather that the hl source?
